ABOUT

Boas Opedun

Early beginnings: I was born in Soroti, Eastern Uganda, and began a journey that would take me beyond the borders of my hometown through perseverance and a desire to make a difference using visual media. I evolved from a curious photography assistant to a freelance photographer.

Mentorship: My photography and videography journey began under the mentorship of Jake Lyell. This experience deepened my understanding of visual storytelling and improved my still photography, video production, and drone operation skills. The early exposure to projects ignited a lifelong passion for capturing stories that inspire action.

Education: To further enhance my skills, I pursued formal education in advanced compositing and special effects for film at Proline Film Academy in Kampala, Uganda. I also enrolled in an online course focused on small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, which led to my certification as a commercial remote pilot through the Pilot Institute. These efforts combined technical proficiency with creative vision.

Global Storyteller: I’ve had the opportunity to travel to over 15 countries, including Zambia, Georgia, Nepal, and West Africa, where I’ve documented the richness of diverse cultures and captivating stories. Each project, whether it’s capturing the vibrant daily life in Mindanao in the Philippines or exploring insightful development initiatives in Niger, is approached with respect, curiosity, and a strong commitment to authenticity.

These wonderful experiences have shaped me into a flexible storyteller, allowing me to connect with various socio-economic backgrounds and cultures.

Driving change through visual media

At the center of my work lies a deep belief in the ability of visual media to aid in global development. I have seen firsthand that a well-told story can reveal truths, challenge perceptions, and mobilize communities. Through visual storytelling, I highlight the positive contributions of humanitarian efforts, NGOs, ministries, non-profits, and businesses.

I provide insights into local communities. Through my camera lens, I capture the essence of humanity, the beauty of diversity, and the potential for growth and transformation within these communities. I strive to inform, inspire, empower, and connect individuals in a collective pursuit of a more transparent and inclusive future.
